At first glance, work relating to budgeting didn’t seem very complex; however, I quickly learned that Santa Clara County contributes to a vast number of services that the public doesn’t always see. Throughout my summer fellowship with the Office of Budget and Analysis, I conducted a qualitative analysis of Santa Clara County’s Budget Equity Tool which is used to assess how well departments address and contribute to equity and inclusion within the County. During this project, I developed interview questions, reviewed departments’ submissions, and provided feedback relating to common themes and recommendations to improve the equity tool process for next year. Santa Clara County’s Government Fellowship has helped me gain insight into resource allocation for innovative solutions and how public policy decisions impact marginalized populations.
